At Village Development Centre (VDC), we believe in providing opportunities for skill development that can change lives and create sustainable livelihoods. With the generous support of the 1% for Development Fund in Switzerland and Give2Asia in the USA, we embarked on a transformative journey to empower women through skill training in door mat weaving.
Partnership with 1% for Development Fund, Switzerland: We conducted a skill training program in floor mat weaving that spanned 15 days and benefited 20 talented cobbler women. This comprehensive training equipped them with essential skills in floor mat weaving, as well as knowledge on assembling, cutting, shaping waste cotton, colour matching, creating various sizes of door mats, and performing minor repairs.
As part of this initiative, 20 women were provided with floor mat weaving machines at no cost. This not only enhanced their income but also offered them the means to support their families, educate their children, address health concerns, and break free from the shackles of debt bondage.
Thanks to the newfound skills and equipment, these women now earn an average of INR 180 ($2.25) per day. This income has not only improved their financial stability but has also empowered them to take charge of their lives and their futures.
Give2Asia, USA: In addition to our collaboration with the 1% for Development Fund, Switzerland, we also partnered with Give2Asia in the USA. This partnership supported the training of three women in door mat production and provided them with a door mat weaving machine, free of cost.
These partnerships have played a pivotal role in uplifting women from Konalai and Kalpalayam, enabling them to build brighter futures for themselves and their families through skill development and entrepreneurship.
