Our Impactful Programs: Transforming Lives, Building Futures

tailaring

At Village Development Centre (VDC), we believe in taking action to create meaningful change. Over the years, we have implemented a range of transformative programs with the generous support of foreign donors, Indian donors, and Corporates under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Each project we undertake reflects our unwavering commitment to improving the lives of those we serve. Let's explore some of our completed projects, starting with those supported by foreign contributions.

Artificial Gem Polishing Workers Empowerment Program

In partnership with Trocaire, Ireland, VDC embarked on a remarkable journey from 1998 to 2009, implementing "The Socio-economic Empowerment of Artificial Gem Polishing Workers" program across Tiruchirappalli, Pudukkottai, and Dindugal districts in Tamil Nadu. This program brought about measurable outcomes and visible impact on the lives of the artificial gem polishing workers.

Women Empowerment

We promoted over 300 Women Self Help Groups (SHGs), fostering a sense of economic independence and self-reliance among women in these regions.

Advocacy and Organization

Guided by our efforts, a state-level organization for women was established, enabling them to have a stronger collective voice in shaping their destinies. We also promoted a federation for women at the district level, strengthening their capacity to address local challenges effectively.

Eradicationof Child Labour System

Over 1200 child labourers were released from their arduous labour and rehabilitated, setting them on a path towards education and a brighter future.

Bonded Labour Liberation

We facilitated the release and rehabilitation of 184 bonded labourers, each receiving vital financial assistance of Rs. 20,000 from the Government to support their livelihoods.

Social Security

More than 3000 workers were enrolled in the Tamil Nadu Manual Workers Social Security Schemes of 1999, ensuring their access to essential social protections.

Housing for Flood Victims

In response to the devastating floods of 2007 in Manachanallur block, we implemented a housing program. We constructed 63 houses at Chennakarai and Neiveli for flood victims, offering them a safe and secure place to rebuild their lives.

Community Infrastructure

Additionally, we built a community toilet in Neyveli village, addressing a pressing sanitation need and improving overall hygiene.

Capacity Building

Throughout this program, we diligently worked on building the capacity of artificial gem polishing workers, staff, and volunteers, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to create lasting change.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Trocaire for their continuous support in empowering these workers and improving their quality of life. At VDC, we remain dedicated to forging partnerships and implementing projects that bring hope and transformation to the communities we serve.
