   Women Empowerment Development

We have developed and sustained 180 SHGs with a total membership of 2,900 women.  Since each woman being a representative of a family, a basic unit in the development process, the total membership caters to the needs of more than a population of 15,000.  There are 14 Clusters in the project area having representation from these SHGs.  The Women Federation at the Block level gets its strength from cluster level representatives. The SHGs have three important leaders in each SHG. They are President, Secretary and Treasurer.Secretary and Treasurer are the authorised signatories.  Thus, we have 540 key leaders representing 180 SHGs.

The members of these structures meet regularly, to take stock of new developments, to review the implementation of resolutions passed already and to plan for the future course of actions through collective and consensus-based decisions.  The participation of women is increasing every day.  The average people attendance is more than 80%.

The collective strength of women has paved the way for mobilisation of resources within and without.  They have considerable savings in the group for their every day activities. The emergence of SHGs has kept them out of focus.

VDC has obtained the second instalment of loan amounting Rs. 20 lakh from RMK, a government of India undertaking. This loan is repayable with principal once in three months over a period of three years.  The mobilisation of fund from the government has helped 600 women to involve in IGP activities. RF provided by Trocaire during 2006-08 is helping poor rural women to get loans for their IGP activities.  So far, it has helped 65 women to initiate their micro enterprises for self-employment and income generation activities.

Being a member in “Mahalir Thittam”, Government of Tamilnadu and Village Development Center is able to obtain various benefits from the government for the SHGs. VDC helped the groups to access the various Government benefits for the women. The SHG leaders along with the VDC staff jointly monitoring the progress of the SHGs and provide counseling for the women for prompt repayment of various loans. The percentage of recovery loan is 100.

VDC organized leadership trainings, TOT training on SHG groups, HIV/AIDS awareness camps, School enrollment campaigns, cluster level trainings, Micro enterprises trainings etc for the members of the SHGs.

Every year VDC organized Women Conference to observe the Women’s Day. This year too, we organized the conference, on 28th March 2008 at Mannachanallur. 3000 women from various SHGs participated in the conference. A Rally and Conference was organized. The women federation submitted their annual reports and other interventions among the women. They explore the importance of eradication of child labour in our area. They also prohibited the government for the liquored.
